Six Steps From Bare Ground to Finished Surface

Excavation and Site Preparation: Every brick paver job begins with excavating the area to the correct depth for the base system being installed. For a residential driveway application, this typically means removing 8 to 10 inches of material below the finished paver surface accounting for the aggregate base, bedding sand layer, and paver thickness. Improper excavation depth is one of the two most common causes of premature surface failure, so we don't cut corners here.

Compacted Aggregate Base: Once the area is excavated and graded for drainage, we install a compacted stone aggregate base in lifts and mechanically compact after each lift. This is the structural foundation of the entire surface. The aggregate must be properly graded to direct water away from the building foundation, a step we verify before any paver is set.

Bedding Sand Layer: A 1-inch layer of coarse bedding sand is screeded flat over the compacted aggregate base. This layer provides the final fine-tuning of the surface grade and gives each paver a consistent, stable seat. The sand bed must be level and undisturbed before paver placement begins. Any footstep on screeded sand requires re-screeding before we continue.

Paver Placement: Pavers are set by hand into the bedding sand in the specified pattern, working from a fixed corner or edge restraint outward. Each paver is placed with tight, consistent joint spacing. We cut pavers to fit along edges and around obstacles using a wet saw or guillotine splitter. Cuts are made cleanly so border courses look intentional, not improvised.

Edge Restraint Installation: Rigid plastic or aluminum edge restraints are spiked into the sub-base along all open edges of the paver field. Without edge restraints, the outer course of pavers creeps outward over time under vehicle loading and frost movement, eventually causing the field to open up and individual pavers to rock. Edge restraints are non-negotiable on driveways.

Joint Sand Compaction and Finishing: Once all pavers are set and edge restraints are secured, dry polymeric joint sand is swept into the joints and the entire surface is compacted with a plate compactor fitted with a rubber pad to protect the paver faces. The polymeric sand binds when wetted, hardening the joints against ant intrusion, weed growth, and joint erosion. We then inspect the finished surface for level and clean it down before we leave the site.
